We live in uncertain times, it is so good to know that we have an all powerful God who can protect us from ANYTHING the Devil throws at us. Like Veggie Tales says "God is bigger than the boogie man!". It seems the world needs reminded of this and the children need to be taught this, so they know that as long as they are with God then they have nothing to fear! God has healed the leper, opened blinded eyes, healed the deaf, the crippled, and a whole list of other miracles! Not to mention, RAISED people from the DEAD! The Bible reminds us many times to "fear not". Where is the faith in today's christians? Lets bring it back and start teaching it to the next generation! I hope these Bible lessons will be used to stir and inspire many hearts of all ages.
Healing the leper (2 Kings chapter 5) Most have heard the story of Naaman many times but it's always a good one to go over again to remind us that if we dip down just one more time and have the faith, we may find the answer to our prayer. It also reminds us to always help someone in need weather they are christian or not. Naaman turned from his false gods after he received his miracle and served the one true God. Memory verse: Jeremiah 30:17a (For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord;) Younger classes. Start with talking about how Naaman was an important man but not a believer in God. Explain the seriousness of leprocy and how it was very easy to spread it from person to person. This is a sickness that has no cure! Naaman doubted Elisha and refused his advise at first but later changed his mind and decided to give it try. When he came out fully healed he turned from his false gods and served only the God of Elisha. Point to get across: We should listen to God and his people no matter how crazy it seems. God knows whats best. We love singing a Naaman song with younger kids and they have fun with the actions! I can't explain the tune if you don't remember this fun song, but here are the words. Maybe you can come up with a tune of your own! Dip down every time you say "dipped" and we hold up another finger each time so we don't loose count! It's nothing fancy but the kids love dipping! Naaman went down to the river and he dipped Naaman went down to the river and he dipped Naaman went down to the river and he dipped and he dipped! and he dipped! and he dipped! and he dipped! Now all my sins are washed away, washed away! Teen class I really encourage the teen class do their reading from the actual Bible and not just a story book. So take turns reading verses in this chapter but be sure to stop to explain words that they may be struggling with understanding. Point to get across: Basically the same point as the younger ones but try to deeper explain how serious the leporcy is. Try to put them in Naaman's shoes. Would you go take a bath in a river if someone you have never even met told you to? Would you maybe do it but then loose faith after a couple of times? Sometimes you just need to keep pressing on and keep the faith that God will come through for us no matter how hopeless things look. There's nothing to hard for God! Jesus heals a man sick of the palsy (Luke 5:17-26) So many lessons in one! This is a very important story that can never be over used. This story really shows us how there are many people that will fill us with doubts of God's power but with the right friends by our side we can lift each other above the crowd and into Jesus's arms. Memory verse Jeremiah 29:13 "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." Younger class. Talk about being paralyzed and try to help them understand what it means. This story points out that Jesus hears our thoughts and so we should even be careful with how we think. It also shows how good it is to have christian friends and to always try to help a friend in need. A fun demonstration if you have the supplies. Lay down a mat, place a sheet or blanket over the mat, and have one child lay on it. Now have the others try to lift him/her by picking up the sheet. Of course they will only get maybe a foot off the ground so it's safe as long as a soft mat is under them. Now ask if they think they could carry someone up to the roof if it meant they could walk again. Would they want their friends to try their best if it was them in need of healing? Teen class. Like I said already, this story has so much to teach us. Your teens can learn so much from this lesson. Again, take turns reading the story straight from the Bible. This is a pretty easy story for them to read and it's important for everyone to read from the actual Bible once in awhile aside from a story book, to make sure we're not leaving out any details and the more they read it the better they will understand and comprehend God's word. Point one: What kind of friends are you keeping? Are they willing to do what it takes to get to Jesus? Do your friends encourage your walk with the Lord or do they try to keep you from Him? If this man didn't have such wonderful friends he would have never made it to Jesus. We need to be careful of the company we keep. Yes we should still be a friend to all the lost but be sure we are influencing them and not letting them influence us. We should be extra sure that we are surrounding ourselves with good christian people. This is a big reason why it is very important to come to church as often as we can, where we can fellowship with other christians. Point two: We should be careful what we do not only with our actions but with how we think. Jesus told the the doubters in the crowd "What reason ye in your heart?". He heard their thoughts and their doubts. If we want to please God we should do our best to be rid of the doubt in our hearts so he can work fully in our lives. Somethings may seem impossible but all things are possible with God! Point three: This leads us to our final point which is the point of this whole post. No illness is stronger than the power of God! Come believing and remove doubt from your heart so God can work miracles in your life. Always remember that God will answer your prayers, but sometimes His answer in no. We may not understand why God let's some people stay sick or crippled, but He always has a purpose. Trust Him and it will all be worth it in the end!
Bind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52)
Blind Bartimaeus is another powerful story of God's amazing grace! It also encourages us to keep pushing through to Jesus even when the world is trying to hold you back. Be proud of your faith and speak up, the Lord will hear you! Memory verse: Mark 10:52a "And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole." Younger class. You can read this story in any children's Bible but for ages over 10 years old you could read this straight from the Bible and just change some of the more difficult words so they can understand it better. But this is a great story for acting out or playing a game that will help them understand and remember it better. Blind Bartimaeus game Have kids take turns being Bartimaeus and blind fold them. Have the rest of the kids be the crowd he was in. The blindfolded child should try to get to the teacher (Jesus). You could even spin them around a little to make it a little harder. Have the kids that are in the "crowd" stand in front of the blind folded kid or form a circle around the teacher even if there's enough kids. Marco pillow game would be fun to go with this story as well! Point to get across. Don't let people hold you back from receiving your blessing! Jesus can heal the blind so there is no need to fear what he can do for you! Even if everyone is telling you to stay away from Him, keep pressing on! Teen class. Read the story from the Bible taking turns reading verses. This really helps to keep their attention better than them just listening to you talk. Or sometimes it helps if they have notebooks for them to keep notes in. Points to get across. Unlike our last story, Bartimaeus has no friends to get him to Jesus. He instead fights blindly through a crowd of people that told him to keep quiet. Is the crowd you'r hanging out with telling you to be quiet about your faith? Do they ignore you when you mention Jesus's name? Don't let your friends keep you from receiving your miracle! Keep pressing through the crowds and don't give up hope. Jesus is willing to help if you are willing to do what it takes to get to him and stand out from the crowd! The world is full of doubters an non-believers. Don't let them hold you back. When they see what God can do in your life even when everything and everyone is against you, it may encourage them to give Jesus a chance in their lives as well. Be the light in the lives of others.
I know there are many other stories of God's healing powers, I hope that these lesson ideas will help encourage your youth as well as yourself. We don't need to fear what the rest of the world is fearing. As long as we have faith and obey the Lord, He will protect His people from harm. Remember "Thy faith hath made thee whole."
